Writing Web Tables

I have been told by numerous people that it is easy to put the tables in the correct format and I would agree if written manually or using a spreadsheet, so I think it best to explain.

Since I started writing web sites in 1990, the programs have improved considerably but there is still room for improvement. I do not want to upset people but it is very easy to make a remark regarding how easy it is, but there other things to consider, the major factor is the time involved.

There are 25 leagues to update on the site, if I did these manually or used a spreadsheet to obtain the correct order, i.e. top of the table at the top and taking the shots into consideration, it would take a considerable amount of time per week, time which I don’t have, therefore it would not be possible to keep the tables up to date as often as I would like. I could only manage once a month, plus the rest of the site would suffer.

My web writing software does have the facility to import certain database formats, luckily the club users one of these formats to keep its league records. After taking a week setting up the Netfusion node to use the import facility, I can now import and set up all the league tables on the site in about 10/15 minutes, pulling the information from the database, therefore enabling me to update the tables every week. Unfortunately the import will only let me sort one of the fields in ascending order, therefore I use the points field and the shots are not considered.

I believe members would rather have the tables up to date in the format which is in use, then no tables at all.

After consulting Netfusion they have no immediate intention to add descending to the import facility.

If anyone is interested I have listed below the non-commercial sites I run:-

www.fepow-day.org - Establishing August 15th as a day of remembrance for Far East PoWs

www.gtyarmouth.co.uk - Historical information on Great Yarmouth

www.britain-at-war.org.uk - Britain during wars

www.roll-of-honour.rjt.co.uk - Remembrance of those who served

www.acle-indoor-bowls.org.uk - Acle Indoor Bowls

www.far-eastern-heroes.org.uk - Stories from those who served in the Far East

www.fepow-community.org.uk - Research into the Far East during WWII

Why the Far East - my father was in the 4th Norfolks who were part of the 18th Division captured in Singapore during WWII becoming a FEPOW (Far East PoW). He worked on the Thailand-Burma Railway (Railway of Death) and survived to tell his story. That was the first story I put on the internet in 1990 - I have moved it now to:-
