Juniors

School of Excellence 2011

Once again Acle youngsters figured prominently at the recent English Youth Bowls Development Scheme event held at the Norfolk Bowls Club.

This year we had four entries, with Dan Mills taking part in the senior section and qualifying for the final Knockout stage. Well done Dan, who was entering for the second time.

In the junior section we had three entries, and all three qualified to go through to the knockout stage. The top score in the Junior section was 41 points so, Congratulations to Owen Arnold, who was entering for the first time, scoring an impressive 37 points. Jack Larter who scored 35 point, and Thomas Cooper also a first time entry with 29 points.

All four deservedly did well after all the time they spent practicing at Friday training sessions.

My thanks go to the Acle coaches, Sue Moore, Jane Rush, Sid Seiley and Alex Sumpter, for helping and encouraging all the youngsters, and to Daphne Townsend for all her efforts on a Friday and the organising of entry forms etc.

County Arts Under 18 Junior Pairs

DanandTom

Dan (Mills) & Tom (Segolo)

On Sunday 13th March 2011 members of the junior team gathered at County Arts for the clubs Under 18 Junior Pairs Tournament.

Acle was once again well represented.  If anything can be said about the juniors it is that they are competitive and willing to try in any competition they enter.  As this was an open contest some of our youngsters were partnered by players from other clubs.

Dan ‘Spike’ Seabourne partnered James Segolo (County Arts), playing to defend their title.  Dan ‘Millsy’ Mills paired up with Tom Segolo (County Arts) and Jessica Ward once again played alongside Sophie Blanche (North Walsham, but soon to be Acle).  The all Acle teams were Edward Lambert and Jack ’ Hot Shot’ Larter, Lewis Moore and Matthew Dawson, Jack Brown and Alex Makepeace and finally but by no means least, the other two Potters Hot Shots, Owen Arnold and Thomas Cooper.

The format was 4 bowl pairs over 6 ends or 45 minutes with 6 groups of 4 pairs each playing three games. Group winners to go through to the quarter finals along with the 2 best runners up.

Jessica and Sophie were in Group A.  They had a good start with a win 6-4 over Gallow however the second round was harder with strong opposition from Katherine Rednall from Ipswich and Suffolk and Bram Cross of Mid Suffolk.  They lost the first end by 1 but took 2 on the second to move into the lead.  Unfortunately their side of the score board saw no further action and at the end they lost 2-11.  The last game was very different the girls stormed ahead to a 7-1 lead at the half way mark and finished 9-4 up.  This gave Jessica and Sophie 4 points but with their second game heavy loss they didn’t have enough shot difference to get them through to the quarter finals.

Group B held the most interest for Acle as three of the pairs had Acle players involved.  The reigning champions Dan and James with Lewis and Matthew and Edward and Jack.  Spike and James started well and found themselves 5-1 after 3 ends, gained a 7 on the fifth and came out 12-3 winners over a pair from Gallow.  This meant that the other game in this group was an all Acle contest.  Edward and Jack took a 4-0 lead after 3 ends but steady play and determination from Lewis and Matthew took the game to a 7-7 draw.

The second round for this group saw Edward and Jack play Jake Briggs and Lee Johnson from Gallow.  This was a close game with Ed and Jack holding the lead 3-1 after 4 ends they held their own and finished with another draw, 4-4.  Daniel and James took on Matthew and Lewis.  The skilled veterans were to much for the spirited youngsters and  they beat them 17-3 and the story was the same when in round three they saw off a determined attack from Edward and Jack and took their third win.  Matthew and Lewis did not have a lot of luck in their third game and where defeated 3-10 by Gallow.

These results meant that Daniel and James had 6 points and a quarter final place, Edward and Jack 2 and Matthew and Lewis 1. In some ways it was a shame that the experienced two were in the same group as the other two pairs. It is difficult to play against people you know and play every week at practice.  What the apprentices have to do is learn from these defeats and remember is that it won’t be very long before the old guys are too old and if they keep playing with as much resolve other players will soon be dreading their names on a draw sheet.

The first round in Group C gave Millsy and Tom a bye as their opposition did not turn up.  They were awarded a 10-4 win and played a few ends to warm up.  At the start of their second round game hearts where in mouths when they dropped a 5, to a Mid Suffolk team, on the first end however those five were the only shots they dropped and they finished 20-5 winners.  Round three matched them against Norfolk BC and by the third end they had established their dominance and where 13-0 up.  Norfolk BC did pull back over the second half with the final score being 15-4.  With all six points Dan and Tom were definitely through and were showing a dominance in their play.

Group D was where Jack Brown and Alex Makepeace played.  Their first game was against Diss and at 3 ends they were level at 2-2.  It was only the match experience of their opposition that finally beat them in a close 4-7 loss. The second round they won 5-2 and the third they drew 5-5 a brilliant performance when you consider that it was their first contest as a team and Alex has only been a member of Acle Juniors for 5 months.  Their 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss gave them 3 points not quiet enough this time but the future looks bright.

The final Acle pair was in Group E.  Thomas and Owen meet a pair from Gallow and had a wonderful start winning the first end  with 1 shot.  Experience won over the next two ends and the score stood at 1-4 after 3, but then the young two where having none of being bullied and although they eventually lost, drew 3-3 over the next three ends making the final score 4-7.  Their resolve unfortunately did not last and in the second round they lost 0-16 to a pair from Norfolk Bowls Club.  The third game was again against a pair from Gallow and the Acle two fought well and got a magnificent 11-2 win.  This gave them a points total of 2.

The Quarter Final draw saw Daniel and James play Diss  and they swept them aside with a dominant 28-1 win.  The same could be said of Millsy and Tom who beat a Suffolk Ladies player and her partner 14-1.

The semi finals were Daniel and James against Beccles.  At the half way mark, Dan and James were 2-4 down but patience and skill saw them book a place in the final when they finally won.  Dan and Tom played one of the Gallow pairs and at half way they were 5-1 up and at the end 9-6 winners.

This meant that it was a dead cert that a Dan and a Segolo or an Acle and County Arts player would win the contest as Dan Seabourne and James Segolo were to meet Dan Mills and Tom Segolo in the final over 8 ends.  As Millse’s mum it is at this point that I must not appear biased, but Dan and Tom did play b****y well and by the penultimate end left James and Dan needing a 5 to win. They didn’t get it so the trophy went to a different Dan and Segolo from last year.

Well done Tom and well done Millsy but mostly well done everybody that put on and played in an Acle Shirt and I must not forget a well done to the parents for bring their off spring to every practice and every contest, Thank You.

Lauren (Acle3) - Hannah (Acle3) - Daniel (Acle1) - Jack (Acle3) - Dan (Acle1) - Rebecca (Acle1)

On Sunday 20th February 2 teams from Acle took part in the Under 16’s Anglian Junior League Final at Browston Hall Indoor Bowls Club.  Daniel Seabourne (14), Dan Mills (13) and Rebecca Carter, (15) played as Acle 1 and Jack Larter (11), Lauren Siely (10) and Hannah Seabourne (11) were Acle 2.  The format being a round robin tournament with the four qualifying teams all playing each other, over 9 ends or 70 minutes,

The draw was not kind to the younger block giving them Acle 1 as their first opponents.  It was difficult for both teams but the older more experienced block swept their junior team mates aside with a 22-2 win.

The second round saw Acle 1 versus Beccles and Acle 2 playing Norfolk Bowls Club.  Acle 1 won the first end by 1 shot and lost the second by the same amount.  By the 3rd they had found their length and weight and won with 5 shots.  After that there was no looking back and they finished convincing winners 17-2.

Acle 2 had a tougher time of it with NBC playing well.  They stuck to their game but unfortunately lost the tie 12-4.

The last game reversed the teams.  Acle 1 played NBC and Acle 2, Beccles.  Beccles was by far the more experienced team but the youngsters from Acle, by now playing with more confidence, were not perturbed and they kept their heads managing to stay level at 5 all after five ends.  Lady luck was not with them after that and they lost single shots on all on the last 4 ends, despite some wonderful bowls and they finished 5-9 down.

Acle 1 faced the NBC team and took control from the off. After 2 ends they were 4-0 up and by 5 had stretched ahead to 11-1.  Their biggest loss was on the last when the opposing skip trailed the jack the to take 3 with his very last wood. Acle 1 coming out the winners 16-5 and tournament victors.

Once more the Acle youngsters gave a good account of themselves.

It could seem to have been a mixed day results wise.  Acle 1 won the tournament and now hold the trophy for a year whereas Acle 2 lost all three of their games.  However in truth both teams gained a victory,  Acle 1 got the trophy but Acle 2 gained experience and notability amongst more practised teams in the Under 16’s category.

Well done everyone and thank you to the parents of team mates that came to give support.

Hot  shots

Hot Shots

Jack Larter - Thomas  Cooper - Owen Arnold

What is the ultimate  dream  for a  young bowler, to wear  your  club shirt, to play at Potters on the famous  blue carpet,  to play in a final or to score a maximum 6 shots in a triples game.

Well three young players from Acle had  all of these  wishes  come true  at the Potters World Bowls  finals  An achievement in it’s own  right   but with a  unique twist  that all three players were 11 years old. It  was their  first  time ever  they   had  reached  a final, and in the Potters   under 14 tournament.

All three players have now been presented with a Bowls International  Hot Shots Badge and Certificate.

The Boys Done Good!

This Saturday morning, three of our younger players, Thomas Cooper, Owen Arnold and Jack Larter all aged 11, lived the bowlers ultimate dream and walked out on to the Potters International Rink, to play. They were accompanied by their opposition from Great Yarmouth, a team that in the past, I may add, thwarted many a good team from Acle, to play in the Potter’s Blue Carpet Tournament Under 14’s final. The match was to be played with 2 bowls over ten ends.

IMG_1024-tn

The three started well and after two ends were level at 1-1.  The rest of the match seemed by the score to be one sided as by the eighth end they were 12-2 down even though they had played exceptionally and had missed shots by a whisker.   However the one thing young age does not make is a quitter and all three pulled back in the penultimate end and scored 3, 1 shot each.  This of course meant that the title could not be theirs as the score stood at 12-5 but the world tour official, Andy, said that all ends could be played and the boys stepped up to the mark and took the full six to win and bring the score to 12-11.

IMG_1032-tn

This achievement saw them not only presented with a silver plate each as runners up by Judy Potter but also given a Hotshot Badge by the director of Bowls International.

The three made their mark and many of the people who saw them play, including one or two in the profession, mentioned their determination, mature conduct and technical ability.  No dropped heads or defeated body language when down just resolve and belief in each other.  It is now up to the coaching staff and the club to help these three develop and grow into the triple that can go far.

I would like to thank June and Bob and Jessica and Millsy for coming along to give their support and the boys parents and families for their encouragement and for turning up to all the practices and competitions.  Thank you to them and WELL DONE BOYS!!!!

Potter’s Blue Carpet

On the 8th January the Under 14’s played in the Potter’s Blue Carpet Tournament.  A straight knock out, 2 bowl, competition played over 10 ends or one hour.

Acle Bowls Club entered 3 teams with ages ranging from 10 to 13.

The C Team, the least experienced block, had a hard draw against Great Yarmouth. Lauren Siely (11), Dylan Millard (13) and Anthony Annison (11) put up a strong fight but unfortunately lost 15-1.

Acle B in the form of Edward Lambert (12), Lewis Moore (12) and Mathew Dawson (12) won their first game 8-6 against Norfolk Bowls Club A and their second beating Colchester 17-3.  These results saw them gain a place in the semi finals against Great Yarmouth, last years winners.

Owen Arnold - Jack Larter - Thomas Cooper

Acle A, Thomas Cooper, Owen Arnold and Jack Larter all aged 11 had a bye in the first round but came up against strong opposition in the shape of Mid Suffolk.  The three young Acle lads played a blinder and came out 8-4 winners in a close game.  This meant that Acle had two teams in the semi’s and the thought of an all Acle final began to creep in to some of the spectators minds.  It was to early to have these thoughts as both teams were drawn against last years finalists. Ely and Great Yarmouth and both teams knew they would have a fight on their hands.

Against Great Yarmouth lady luck seemed to desert Acle B who played well but nothing seemed to go their way.  The final score of 3-10 was very disappointing for the block.  Bowls can be a very cruel game.

In the other match Acle A had it mainly their own way and were 10-6 up with one end to play.  This last end proved to be the most tense and difficult for everyone from Acle! Ely were laying 3 with only the skips last bowls to be played.  Ely went first and with his bowl just running through a fraction to far missed the opportunity to force an extra end.  Jack Larter followed his team mates fervent instructions ditched his last bowl and took the 10-9 win and a place in the final.

Dan Mills - Matthew Sparrow - Jack Brown

The following Saturday saw the Under 17’s take to the carpet.  Matthew Sparrow, Dan Mills and Jack Brown were there to wear the Acle shirt.  This was not the team that had been entered or in fact the second choice but circumstances played their part in the selection process.  So it is here that I have to personally thank Jack Brown for stepping in at the last minute to complete the team.  He is a young lad with great potential and although this year may have been a little early for him he played with confidence and produced some brilliant shots.

Unfortunately on the 3rd end when Acle were 3-1 up Gallow A’s skip took the jack and rolled through to finish 4 up for the end.  This was the defining moment and the score went out to 3-10.  At this point the boys took control and battled back to 7-10 The last end gave everyone hope, 3 to draw and holding 2. To get the magic 3 and an extra end was however just out of reach and although Matthew hit the right spot the jack just did not go far enough and the final score was 9-10.

Personally I am very proud of all the players that took part and the way in which they played but I have to add that I was not so proud of the comments made on face book after the event.

I hope that we can all get behind the 3 young lads in the Under 14 final and wish them all the luck in the world. They have to play on Saturday 22nd Jan. at the unearthly time of 9.15am on the International Rink.  I hope they enjoy the event and all its bling and take the experience as one they will never forget.

Well played everyone and thank you.

Junior Bowls Runners Up

Mathew Dawson - Owen Arnold - Thomas Cooper

The most successful triple on the day were Matthew (12) Thomas (11) and Owen (11).  They reached the final and were only beaten by the holders of the title in a tense final.  They were presented with the runners up trophies the first of many if this showing is anything to go by.
